Washburn is a small, unincorporated rural town located within the Northside of Grainger County in Middle East Tennessee. The northside of Grainger County is separated from the southern half by Clinch Mountain. Washburn rests within Clinch Valley between Copper Ridge and Clinch Mountain. The town was originally called Puncheon Camp, Washburn was the county seat of Grainger County until 1801. The town grew around a depot for the Knoxville-Cumberland Gap Railroad and "Washburn" was named after a faciliator of that development.

• Scenic Touring: Rt. 131 through Washburn is an excellent rural scenic route that starts at Thorn Hill and 25e on the east end of Grainger County and ends at Luttrell in Union County. Rt. 61 connects it to Blaine along the historic Emory Road. The railroad played an important part of Washburn's formational history and tracks still run alongside Rt.131 in the present day. Rt. 131 meets Mountain Road near Powder Springs. Mountain Rd. cuts across Clinch Mountain to Rutledge Pike near Joppa Elementary. Washburn has quilt squares along the Appalachian Quilt Trail.

• Tennessee's die-hard UT sports fans have been known to travel great distances to support their favorite sport, team, or athlete but Washburn's UT Volunteers ("Vols") fans consider themselves lucky in that they can be at campus in Knoxville in as little as a half an hour (in optimal traffic conditions). To beat the rush, many choose to arrive early in the day and "tailgate" with friends and fellow fans on game day. Although the actual game may not take place until the evening, for some fans, a UT game is no less than an all-day-affair and a great way to break bread, relax, and socialize.

Washburn is a small, unincorporated rural town located within the Northside of Grainger County in Middle East Tennessee. The northside of Grainger County is off the beaten track but not far off it. Just enough to ensure peace and tranquility to those who cherish it. Washburn is the hub of activity in the northside, the location of the train depot and the area's medical clinic, post office, library, bank, park, and public school. Residents of Northside came together in 2006 to form the Northside Community Action Group with the purpose of building a community center at the park in Washburn.
